Clean Sky

cleanskyClean Sky is a European research initiative aimed at speeding up technological breakthroughs that will lessen the impact of air transport on the environment. It is split into six main areas of work:

  • smart fixed-wing aircraft
  • green regional aircraft
  • green rotorcraft
  • sustainable and green engines
  • systems for green operations
  • eco-design

The systems for green operations area is likely to be where OR is most applicable. Its focus includes “all-electrical aircraft equipment and systems architectures, thermal management, capabilities for “green” trajectories and mission and improved ground operations”. The project is quite new, having started in mid-2008. See the Clean Sky website for more information.
