ARPA-E. FREEDM. A green OR building.
The development of ARPA-E is underway. It is the energy version of the US agency DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). ARPA-E received $400 million under the latest stimulus package. Follow this link for a recent article about it, and this one for testimony from Dr. Stephen Chu about ARPA-E from 2006, well before he became US Energy Secretary. The latter includes this description by Dr. Chu:
The agency would itself perform no research, but would fund work conducted by universities, startups, established firms and national laboratories.
FREEDM Systems Center is an NSF-sponsored consortium of universities working on the development of “green energy grid infrastructure”. Features will include smart-grid technology, distributed energy management, the ability to run independent of the central grid, and more. NC State seems to be at the helm. See the site for more.
Princeton’s OR/Financial Engineering building (shown above) is green. Read more about its green roof, energy efficiency, etc. here and through the links within.
